Understanding the names of God in Scripture can open your eyes to His character and deepen your relationship with Him. One of those powerful names is Jehovah Jireh, which means “The Lord Will Provide.”

This is the chapter where God tests Abraham by asking him to sacrifice his beloved son Isaac. Abraham obeys, even though he doesn’t fully understand why. Just as he raises the knife to offer Isaac on the altar, God stops him and provides a ram caught in a nearby thicket.
Overwhelmed with gratitude and awe, Abraham names the place “The Lord Will Provide”—in Hebrew, YHWH-Yireh (Jehovah Jireh).

So when we say Jehovah Jireh, we’re literally saying, “The Lord who sees and provides.” He sees our needs, even before we know how to express them, and He makes a way—even when we see no way.

When we think of provision, we often think of money, food, jobs, or material things. And while God does care about those needs, Jehovah Jireh reveals something even deeper.
