The Book of Numbers can sometimes seem like a collection of genealogies and census data, but it is much more than that. Numbers is a story of God’s faithfulness, the journey of His people through the wilderness, and the challenges they faced along the way. It also foreshadows the coming of Jesus Christ, who provides for and leads His people. Background of Numbers
So, the title “Numbers” comes from the two censuses taken at the beginning and end of the book, which record the number of Israelites in the wilderness. Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible, continuing the story of Israel’s journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. Written by Moses, Numbers covers a period of 40 years in the wilderness, after Israel’s Exodus from Egypt and before their entry into Canaan.
Though much of the book centers around the challenges of wandering in the wilderness, it also highlights God’s provision, guidance, and faithfulness. The experiences of the Israelites point forward to the work of Jesus, who leads us to our eternal promised land.
The Wilderness Journey (Numbers 1–14)
Numbers begins with the preparation for the Israelites’ journey and the establishment of the community in the wilderness. The first part of the book details the census of Israel, the organization of the tribes, and the setting up of the tabernacle. As Israel begins its journey toward the Promised Land, they face many challenges, both from within and from outside forces.
The Israelites’ Disobedience (Numbers 13–14)
So, in these chapters, Moses sends 12 spies into Canaan to scout out the land. While 10 spies report that the land is full of giants and is too difficult to conquer, Joshua and Caleb trust in God’s promise and believe they can take the land. The people, however, rebel against God and refuse to enter the Promised Land. As a result, God pronounces judgment on that generation, condemning them to wander in the wilderness for 40 years.
Therefore, this disobedience and lack of faith is a powerful reminder of the importance of trusting in God’s promises, no matter the circumstances. Jesus calls us to have faith in Him and trust His plan, even when we cannot see the way forward (Matthew 17:20).
God’s Provision and Guidance (Numbers 11–12, 16–17)
Throughout the wilderness journey, God provides for His people, sending manna from heaven, quail for food, and water from a rock. He also provides leadership through Moses, Aaron, and the priests. Even when the Israelites complain and rebel, God’s mercy and provision are evident.
Jesus, as the Bread of Life, provides for our spiritual nourishment and guides us through our own wilderness journeys. So, just as God provided for the Israelites in the desert, He provides for us today, offering grace, guidance, and sustenance through His Word (John 6:35).

The Law and the Priesthood (Numbers 18–19)
In these chapters, God outlines additional laws and instructions for the Israelites, including the roles of the priests and Levites. The priesthood was set apart to mediate between God and the people, offering sacrifices and performing rituals to maintain the holiness of the community. Therefore, the Levites were tasked with caring for the tabernacle and assisting in the worship of God.
The Role of the Priesthood (Numbers 18)
The priests were to be holy and set apart, serving as mediators between the people and God. In the New Testament, Jesus is our great High Priest, who intercedes for us and offers Himself as the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. So, through Jesus, we have direct access to God, and we are called to be a royal priesthood, offering our lives as living sacrifices (Hebrews 4:14-16, 1 Peter 2:9).
The Red Heifer and Purification (Numbers 19)
The ritual of the red heifer involved sacrificing a perfect, unblemished animal to purify those who were ceremonially unclean. This ritual pointed to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus, who is the perfect Lamb of God, and through His blood, we are purified from sin (Hebrews 9:13-14, 1 John 1:7).
The Promise of the Future (Numbers 22–24)
In these chapters, we read about the story of Balaam, a prophet who is hired to curse the Israelites but ends up blessing them instead. God uses Balaam to declare a prophecy of a coming king who will arise from Israel, a prophecy that points to Jesus as the ultimate King and Messiah.
The Prophecy of Balaam (Numbers 24:17)
Balaam prophesies, “A star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel.” This prophecy is a direct reference to Jesus, who was born of the tribe of Judah and is the eternal King who will reign forever (Matthew 2:2, Revelation 22:16).

In the Wilderness Journey: The Israelites’ journey through the wilderness is a picture of our spiritual journey. Just as God led the Israelites to the Promised Land, Jesus leads us to eternal life. He is our Guide through life’s challenges, providing for us, strengthening us, and bringing us safely home (John 14:6).
In God’s Provision: The manna and water from the rock represent Jesus as our spiritual nourishment. He is the true Bread of Life and Living Water, satisfying our deepest needs (John 6:32-35, John 7:37-38).
In the Priesthood: The priesthood of Israel points forward to Jesus, our High Priest, who offers Himself as the perfect sacrifice and intercedes on our behalf. Through Him, we have access to God (Hebrews 9:11-12).
In Balaam’s Prophecy: Balaam’s prophecy of a future King points to Jesus as the promised Messiah, the King who will reign forever. He is the fulfillment of God’s promises to Israel and the hope of all nations (Matthew 2:2, Revelation 19:16).

- Faith and Obedience: Numbers reminds us of the importance of trusting God and obeying His commands. Jesus calls us to follow Him and live according to His will, even when we don’t understand the full picture (John 14:15, Matthew 7:21).
- Jesus as Our Provision: Just as God provided manna and water to the Israelites, Jesus is the Bread of Life and Living Water. We are invited to find our true sustenance in Him, trusting that He will meet our spiritual needs (John 6:35, John 4:13-14).
